14 New D.C. Speed Cameras Now Issuing Tickets, Fines

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — More than a dozen speed cameras targeting heavy-footed drivers in the District are officially active.

The 14 new speed cameras began issuing tickets with accompanying fines Friday. The cameras were installed last month and went through the 30-day grace period in which violators only received warning tickets. The grace period expired Thursday.

Police say speed and restricted truck traffic have been problematic in the areas where the cameras have been placed.

Gary Yeager already receives about two tickets a month from existing cameras in the District. The additional enforcement may push that average northward.

“It’s not something that you want to do,” Yeager said. “It’s just that your coming in and trying to stay with the flow of traffic. Before you know it… ‘Bam!’ you’re popped.”
